The Mozartists Playlists: ‘Mozart’s Keys: E flat major’.

30 April 2020

This evening The Mozartists were due to be performing at Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall with fortepianist Ronald Brautigam and soprano Samantha Clarke. The programme, the first in a three-part series entitled ‘Mozart’s Keys’, was to have explored Mozart’s writing in the key of E flat major, with the two main works being the Piano Concerto No. 22, K.482 and the Symphony No. 39, K.543.

I am deeply saddened not to be conducting my wonderful colleagues in this magnificent repertoire this evening, but as a very small token of recompense I have put together a playlist of Mozart compositions in E flat major, including a movement from both of the works mentioned above (the former in Ronald Brautigam’s own recording). Much of Mozart’s music in this key has its own unique colour, imparting great warmth, nobility and wisdom (it is no coincidence that The Magic Flute begins and ends in this key).

This is the first in a series of playlists that we will be creating over the coming months, and I hope you enjoy it.

With best wishes,

Ian Page
Artistic Director
